Sexual Assault Symposium

This two-day symposium will provide vital information regarding the investigation, prosecution, and probation supervision of sex offenders.

Day one will focus on sexual assaults committed by strangers and will include a primer on DNA analysis by the Arizona Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory. The “Golden State Killer” serial rapist and homicide case, which was solved through the use of genetic genealogy, will then be used as a case study for the training. Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert and California District Attorney Association Executive Director Greg Totten, who prosecuted the case, will lead the discussion.

Day two of the training will focus on sexual assaults with a non-stranger assailant. Beginning with a presentation on counter-intuitive victimology, an Arizona case will be presented by the victim, detective, and prosecutor. The training will conclude with a presentation by a noted psychologist with expertise in evaluating and treating sex offenders.

This project was supported by Subgrant No. 2020-WF-AX-005 awarded by the state administering office for the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice's STOP Formula Grant Program. The opinions, findings, conclusions, and recommendations expressed are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the state or the U.S. Department of Justice.
